Marsascala residents have been kept in the dark following the fire which destroyed the Sant’Antnin waste recycling plant, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Arnold Cassola said.

This morning, Prof. Cassola shared a message he received on Facebook from a Marsascala resident, who explained that two days after the fire, the fumes emitted from the plant still seem to be present in the valley and are affecting the residents living in the area.

The large fire was finally put out yesterday, however the dark, thick fumes remain and several messages from the Health authorities warn about the plant fire emitting a combination of chemicals, gases and fine particles.

The Marsascala resident who contacted Prof. Cassola described that till today the smell has remained constant and it has come to point where the residents are feeling their health is being affected by such fumes. The resident then said that at 6:15am this morning, they made a call to the Health Promotion and Infectious Disease Directorate Helpline in which the resident describes that he was told investigations were being carried out.

The resident continues to reiterate the urgency of the situation and that “this is simply not on”. They express urgently how residents have the right to be notified and that it is the state’s duty to do so and carry out measures to improve the situation in order to protect resident’s health.
