INDEPTH: Bad elements in PL should not put off honest politicians – Chris Fearne

INDEPTH online Tuesday, 23 May 2017, 13:12 Last update: about 8 years ago

In a strikingly honest reply during INDEPTH, The Malta Independent's current affairs programme, Health Minister Chris Fearne said that in every organisation there are those who are shady and those who are honest. He was replying to a question by Pierre Portelli on whether he feels comfortable working in a party that is riddled with corruption allegations regarding his fellow Minister Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Keith Schembri. Mr Fearne insisted that honest politicians should be more encouraged to join the PL in moments like these and not leave the party.

He also admitted that, should the PL return to power after 3 June, and if he is elected on both districts, he will surely contest for the post of Deputy Leader, which will see him become Deputy PM during the second legislature under Joseph Muscat's leadership.

He was also asked what his position would be if the PL lost to Simon Busuttil's Forza Nazzjonali and the post for PL Leader becomes vacant. Avoiding a direct answer, Mr Fearne said he believes in Joseph Muscat and would like to see him lead the party to a third victory.  Asked whether he still believes that the PL would win with a bigger landslide as he had predicted during an event with his constituents, Mr Fearne was more cautious and said that every vote counts.

The minister, who, according to the iSurvey commissioned by The Malta Independent, is the second most popular figure in Joseph Muscat's cabinet after Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, spoke of his party's plans in the health sector should it be returned to power.
