What used to be a perfectly accessible pavement in Birkirkara road, St Julians, has become dangerous and inaccessible during a construction project.

This newspaper received reports from residents from St Julian's, complaining that the pavement cannot be walked upon, and deeming it a hazard due to bricks lying on it and blocks of concrete making the width narrower.

Furthermore, rubble and cracks on the wider part of the pavement are causing it to be a hindrance to walk on.

When contacted by The Malta Independent, St Julian's mayor Guido Dalli said that he fully understands why the residents are annoyed, however the situation is an "irritable" yet "tricky" one.

"Whatever you do will create panic," he said, "if you close the road you cause panic, if you create a pavement, it will create panic."

"We have urged the contractor to hurry up the process," he said, "but this is something which will not take weeks to be ready but months, until the building is ready."

The pavement has been in this state for at least two weeks.

The mayor explained that if another pavement is created for people to use, it will end up reaching till the middle of the two-way road.

He said that he will be making contact with the owner in order to reach a compromise on how to solve the problem.
