Voters who will be abroad on election day voting today

Saturday, 27 May 2017, 12:07 Last update: about 8 years ago

Early voters in this year’s snap election are heading to the Naxxar counting hall today to cast their votes.

Those persons voting today went to the Electoral Commission offices in Naxxar (ex-trade fair grounds), or in Rabat Gozo, between Monday 8 May and Friday 26 May and have registered for early voting.

This particular option was made available to those voters who would be abroad on election day.

In addition persons who are registered as voters St Vincent de Paule Residence and 30 Homes for the Elderly, as well as those who are residents (but not registered voters in them) up to 27 May, 2017, shall be able to cast their votes today as well.

The Malta Independent had reported a rather bizarre situation earlier this year. There were logistical issues for the 120-person Small Nations Games contingent to exercise their right to vote at the election, since the Games end on the day of the election and, a week before – when people going abroad are allowed to vote early, on 27 May – their flight leaves in the morning.

An agreement had the athletes and officials checking in at the airport for their flight today, and then they were driven in coaches and buses to the Naxxar complex where they were allowed to vote as early voters. Once this was done, they were driven back to the airport and took their flight to San Marino.
