How the Maltese voted: Labour remains strong in the south, obtains majority of votes in Gozo

When observing breakdowns of votes won by each political party in these general elections, it is clear that the party-stronghold reputations of the district still stands. Districts 2 till 7 saw a large overall Labour majority, whilst Districts 8 till 12 remained in favour of the Nationalist party, albeit by a smaller margin when compared to the Labour's majority victories. District 1, which sways between parties and is normally won by the party that takes over Castille, was won by the Labour Party, which also won the 13th district Gozo. Last time round it had obtained a minority of first count votes but cross voting had later given Labour three MPs to the PN’s two.

The following statistics are a breakdown of votes depicting the percentages in which they were distributed to the various parties in last Saturday’s general election. The percentages are based on the number of valid votes within each district.

District 1

The majority of voters voted for the Labour Party (13,844 or 57.22%), whilst 10,094 voters (41.72%), voted for the Nationalist Party. 147 votes (0.61%) went to Alternattiva Demokratika, 80 votes (0.33%) went to Moviment Patrijotti Maltin, and 20 (0.11%) and 4 (0.02%) votes went to Alleanza Bidla and Independent candidates respectively. District 1 encorporates Valletta, Floriana, Hamrun, Marsa, Pieta, Gwardamanga and Santa Venera.

District 2

Traditionally a Labour stronghold, the Cottonera people once again gave Labour a substantial majority with 17,353 voters (71.22%), while only 6,761 (27.75%) voted for the Nationalist Party. 174 (0.71% of) voters voted for Alternattiva Demokratika while 78 voters (0.32%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote. District 2 groups Birgu, Senglea, Bormla, Haz-Zabbar, St Peter’s, part of Fgura, Kalkara and Xghajra.

District 3

The PL obtained 16,328 first count votes (69.89%) on the 3rd district, another Labour stronghold.  

The PN obtained 6,775 votes (29%). AD obtained 152 votes (0.65%), Moviment Patrijotti Maltin got 73 votes (0.31%) and 35 votes (0.15%) went to independent candidates.

 

The 3rd district is made up of Zejtun, Ghaxaq, Marsascala and Marsaxlokk.

District 4

This other district of the south was again won by Labour with 16,383 (67.71%). 7,528 voters gave their trust to the Nationalist Party (31.11%). 171 (0.71%) of voters gave their preference to Alternattiva Demokratika whilst 114 voters (0.47%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote. District 4 groups the electorate from part of Fgura, Gudja, Paola, Santa Lucija and Tarxien.

District 5

This was another district in which Labour obtained two-thirds of the vote. Labour obtained 15,259 votes (65.73%), while 7,720 (33.25%) voted for the Nationalist Party. 156 (0.67% of) voters voted for Alternattiva Demokratika while 80 voters (0.34%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote. District 5 consists of Birzebbuga, Kirkop, Imqabba, Hal Farrug, Qrendi, Safi, Zurrieq and Bubaqra.

District 6

The Labour Party garnered 59.44%, or 13,717 of the votes. The Nationalist Party won 9,164 votes, or 39.71%. Alternattiva Demokratika won 0.41% of the votes (94), while Moviment Patrijotti Maltin and Alleana Bidla won 0.37% and 0.07% of the votes respectively (85 and 16). District 6 is made up of Qormi, Siggiewi and Luqa.

 

District 7

This district was also won by Labour with 14,042 votes (56.44%), whilst 10,509 voters gave their trust to the Nationalist Party (42.24%). 218 (0.88% of) voters opted for Alternattiva Demokratika while 81 voters (0.33%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote. District 7 is made up of Zebbug, Dingli, Mgarr, Mtarfa, Rabat, Bahrija and Tal-Virtu.

District 8

This was one of the few districts won by the Nationalist Party. With 12,591 votes, the party secured 52.89% of the votes, whilst the Labour Party obtained 45.49% (10,830). Alternattiva Demokratika won 1.12% (267) of the district votes, while Moviment Patrijotti Maltin won 117 (0.49%) of votes. District 8 is composed of Balzan, Birkirkara, Fleur-de-Lys, Swatar, Iklin and Lija.

District 9

The PN obtained 13,007 votes (56.27%) on the 9th district while the Labour Party obtained 9,712 votes (42.01%). Alternattiva Demokratika had 297 votes (1.28%), Moviment Patrijotti Maltin obtained 65 votes (0.28%) and Alleanza Bidla got 36 votes (0.16%).

 

District 9 is made up of Gharghur, Msida, Swatar - Msida, San Gwann, Swieqi, Madliena - Swieqi, Ta' Xbiex.

District 10

This remained the largest PN stronghold, with the Nationalist Party getting 14,058 votes (60.29%), while 8,873 voted (38.05%) for the Labour Party. 273 (1.17% of) voters voted for Alternattiva Demokratika while 74 voters (0.32%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote. Alleanza Bidla secured 0.18% of the votes, with 41 votes. District 10 consists of Gzira, part of Naxxar, Bahar ic-Caghaq, Pembroke, St Julian’s, Paceville and Sliema.

District 11

The Nationalist Party won a majority of 55.24%, obtaining 13,207 votes. With 10,282 votes, the Labour Party secured 43% of the votes. Alternattiva Demokratika won 1.21% (290) of the district votes, while Moviment Patrijotti Maltin won 101 (0.42%) of votes. Alleanza Bidla secured 0.13% of the votes with 30 ballot sheets in their favour. District 11 is made up of Mdina, Attard, Mosta and Burmarrad.

District 12

The Nationalist Party obtained a majority With 11,921 votes, or 50.97% of the votes, whilst the Labour Party secured 47.54% (11,120 votes). Alternattiva Demokratika won 0.85% (199) of the district 12 votes, whilst Moviment Patrijotti Maltin won 97 (0.41%) of votes.  Alleanza Bidla secured 0.18% of the votes (42 votes) and Independent candidates won 0.05% (11 votes). District 12 is made up of Mellieha, part of Naxxar and St Paul’s Bay,

District 13

The Gozo district was won by Labour with 13,233 votes (51.23% of the votes). 12,361 of voters gave their trust to the Nationalist Party (47.85%). 12,361 (47.85% of) voters voted for Alternattiva Demokratika whilst 72 voters (0.28%) gave Moviment Patrijotti Maltin their vote and 41 votes (0.16%) were secured by Independent candidates.
