Zammit Lewis, Manuel Mallia, Francis Zammit Dimech, George Pullicino not elected

Kevin Schembri Orland Tuesday, 6 June 2017, 10:01 Last update: about 8 years ago

A number of well-known politicians have failed to be elected in the 2017 elections, while some new-blood has been injected into Parliament.

This of course, does not take into account any by-elections which would need to take place from candidates elected on two districts, thus meaning that we might see some of these veteran faces taking a seat in Parliament.

The Labour Party will have a seven seat majority in Parliament. If the PN or the PL do not have enough candidates to reach that situation, then the respective party will be allocated more seats to ensure that a seven seat majority is in place. The closest candidates to election irrespective of district from that party would then fill those seats, this is known as the proportionality system.

The Labour Party has a few faces in the House of Representatives so far, such as Aaron Farrugia, Robert Abela and Byron Camilleri. The first new PN MP has been announced (Therese Comodini Cachia although she said she will not take the seat), and this announcement was followed by Jean Pierre Debono.

Among the veterans who were not elected are Manuel Mallia, Censu Galea, Godfrey Farrugia, George Pullicino, Carm Mifsud Bonnici, Edward Zammit Lewis and Deborah Schembri.

Aaron Farrugia

On the first district, Aaron Farrugia was elected by PL voters. Dr. Aaron Farrugia is the Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Freeport Corporation.  He is also an Economics and Financial Services graduate from the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy and obtained an MA in European Studies from the Institute of European Studies at the University of Malta. He had a strong showing early on in the district, with 3,600 first count votes, more than his colleague Deo Debattista, who was also elected. On the PN side, Paula Mifsud Bonnici lost her seat in Parliament. PL veteran Luciano Busuttil was also not elected.

On the third district, new PL candidate Silvio Grixti was elected.

Byron Camilleri

On the fourth district, Fgura mayor Byron Camilleri was elected, however veteran PL MP Stefan Buontempo was not elected on the 2nd or 4th districts. Etienne Grech also lost his seat, not being elected from either the 3rd or the 4th.

Well-known MP Carm Mifsud Bonnici did not achieve enough votes on either the 3rd nor the 4th district, being the last candidate not to be elected on the 4th.

Julia Farrugia

On the 5th district, PL’s Joe Farrugia will not be returning to Parliament. Julia Farrugia Portelli however, is a newly elected MP from the 5th district. She took over 2,000 2nd count votes from Prime Minister Joseph Muscat (who was elected on the first count) and was very visible during the 2017 campaign.

Hermann Schiavone

For the PN, Hermann Schiavone was elected, becoming yet another new face in Parliament for the PN. He has contested this district in the past, but this is his first time elected.

Robert Abela

On the sixth district PL candidate Robert Abela, son of President Emeritus George Abela, was elected to Parliament for the first time. He is more or less replacing Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, who was elected last time round but resigned to be appointed President. Former PN MP Peter Micallef will not be returning to Parliament, not being elected on the  6th and 7th districts.

Former PL whip Godfrey Farrugia, who had left the PL close to when the election was called, moving to the Partit Demokratiku, will not be in Parliament this time round, having been knocked out of both the sixth and seventh districts.

Jean Pierre Debono

On the 7th district, PN’s new candidate Jean Pierre Debono was elected and is currently the Assistant Secretary General of the PN. This result saw veteran MP Antoine Borg not taking a seat.

PN MEP Therese Comodini Cachia was the first new PN face to be elected to Parliament, however it was later announced that she would not be takint up the seat. PN’s Censu Galea will not be returning, having not been elected on the 8th and 13th district.

Former Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis was not elected this time round, which was quite a surprising turn of events. He had quite a battle on both the 8th and 9th districts, however he did not have as much votes as Chris Cardona or Michael Falzon.

Therese Comodini Cachia

On the tenth district, PD Leader Marlene Farrugia has become the first third party candidate in Parliament since 1962. The PD candidates, as part of the PN-PD coalition, appeared under the PN on the ballot sheet, as per their coalition agreement. Regardless, Dr Farrugia will be representing her party in Parliament. Veteran PN MP Francis Zammit Dimech did not receive enough votes to be elected.

Manuel Mallia, who was a minister this past legislature, was not elected from neither the 9th not 10th districts. He received quite a few votes, however this was not enough to pass Evarist Bartolo on the 10th, Clifton Grima on the 9th, and Michael Falzon on both districts.

Former PN Minister and MP George Pullicino was not elected, after a heated battle on the 10th district with Karl Gouder.

Alex Muscat

On the 11th district, PL newcomer Alex Muscat was elected after receiving over 2,000 first count votes. He is currently the minority leader in the Mosta local council. PL’s Deborah Schembri however, was not elected from either district she contested on (11th and 12th). This past legislature, Dr Schembri was Parliamentary Secretary for Lands.

Clint Camilleri

In Gozo, on the 13th district, now former MP Franco Mercieca has been replaced by PL candidate Clint Camilleri. Mr Camilleri is the Qala Mayor. On the PN side of things, Giovanna Debono, who turned Independent part-way during the last legislature, chose not to contest these elections, and while not a new face in Parliament, Marthese Portelli was elected from this district. Frederick Azzopardi was also not elected as a result of this.

A number of candidates had chosen not to contest the 2017 elections. For the PL, these were former Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech, former Minister George Vella, former MPs Joe Debono Grech, Charles Mangion, Joseph Sammut, Charles Buhagiar.

From the PN side, Former MP and former Minister Tonio Fenech, former MPs Charlo Bonnici, Anthony Abela and Michael Gonzi had decided not to contest these elections.
