Monday, 3 July 2017, 14:59 Last update: about 8 years ago

A group of youths forming part of the the Kummissjoni WEB, responsible for Public Relations and Media at the Society of St. Mary and King George V Band Club of Mqabba, has embarked on a project titled Rakkont Haj.

The project is about documenting the history of the small village of Mqabba as well as events happened in the past, through interviews with people which themselves had lived these events.

It has been going on for months with interviews with elderly people, filming and editing.  Now as it has reached the final stages of implementation these interviews are being broadcast regularly on social media.

These stories feature the various aspects of social life in the village of Mqabba ranging from traditional games like the passju, boċċi, żibeġ and more, the quarry industry and how it evolved, the feasts and fireworks which are synonymous with this village, hobbies of the past, the hardship during World War II, the social life 70 years ago, pastimes and hobbies of our ancestors.

The group also discovers historical places and listens to interesting stories.  Indirect focus is set on the village's unique dialect as well as on learning words used in the past but which are nearly nonexistent with the today generation.

The series is grabbing the attention not only of the elderly but also it is very useful to children and students which can have a better idea of how life was in the past.

All the clips can be viewed on the Facebook page www.facebook.com/santamarija

The project is being funded by Creative Communities, fund administered by the Malta Arts Council.
