There are a total of six nominees for the MEP post vacated by Therese Comidini Cachia, who took up her seat in the Maltese Parliament.

Comodini Cachia was elected to Parliament on the 8th district in the last election. Initially she had decided to relinquish her seat, saying she preferred working for Malta in the European Parliament but, after the ensuing uproar announced that she would take up her seat in the Maltese Parliament. 

The Electoral Commission notifies that the counting of votes for the casual election to fill the seat vacated by Therese Comodini Cachia, is taking place on Tuesday, 18 July 2017 at the Naxxar Counting Complex. Today marked the deadline for nominations.

The nominated candidates are: Raymond Bugeja ,Kevin Cutajar, Helga Ellul, Jonathan Shaw, Norman Vella, and Francis Zammit Dimech.
