Tents higher than one metre have to go to the back of the beach, authorities say

Monday, 24 July 2017, 20:04 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Malta Tourism Authority and the Lands Authority are reminding the general public that gazebos, sun-shaders, tents or similar structures higher than 1 metre must be placed at the back of the beach so as to minimise obstruction for other beach-goers.

The statement came after several reports of tent invasions at popular beaches. It seems that several public beaches ended up covered in gazebos and tents soon after the authorities swooped in and removed illegal deckchairs and umbrellas. Photos show that in many beaches, including Armier, tents had been set up right at the water's edge, occupying large areas. Many commented that selfish beachgoers had now taken the place of greedy operators.

“Moreover, it is not permitted for towels or any kind of material to be attached to beach umbrellas.”

The two authorities will be placing information boards at Armier, Little Armier and other locations advising the public regarding certain aspects of the Code of Conduct applicable on beaches.

Apart from the above-mentioned points, the signs will include notices regarding the prohibition of paddleboats and recreational boats, fishing and spear fishing inside swimming zones, the presence of dogs and other animals, littering, loud music and other forms of nuisance.

The two authorities recommend that everyone use their better judgement and be respectful towards others so that we can all enjoy Malta and Gozo’s beaches in the best way possible.
