Former PN candidate David Thake shuts down his online radio station

Malta Independent Tuesday, 25 July 2017, 17:22 Last update: about 8 years ago

Former Nationalist Party general election candidate and popular radio presenter David Thake has decided to shut down his online radio station, Switch Radio.

Writing a post on Facebook, Thake said that "the experience was a lesson. People will try and shut you up until they realise that they cannot.... until they can."

David Thake had set up his radio endeavour when the Nationalist Party stopped his popular radio show which aired on the PN's Radio 101. The show, which aired as the main political drive-time show for the station, was called "Taghna Lkoll", the slogan used by the Labour Party in the 2013 general elections.

Thake was made to stop his show as part of the PN policy not to have election candidates running a TV or radio programme. The decision was later overturned following outcry at Dar Centrali and by loyal Radio 101 listeners.

Thake ran for a parliamentary seat in the last election but failed to get elected. He had also considered running for the PN Leadership, however did not submit his nomination

Speaking with the Malta Independent, Thake said that “Switch radio was created when the party decided to stop all candidates from partecipating on party media. Subsequently the party reversed its decision and Switch radio then didn't have much of a use at that point in time.”

“The price of using DAB licenses are far to high in my opinion so we renounced to using DAB and I don’t really see the use for it.”

“It served its purpose,” he said. “Post elecion, I stopped Radio 101.” He said that Switch has just been playing music and he sees no reason to keep it going.

Thake was unwilling to comment on the text in his tweet, but did say that it was self-explanatory.
