A pathway along the iconic bay of Xlendi has been rehabilitated and upgraded for the improved access and enjoyment of countless visitors that frequent the area.

The works which were carried out by the Munxar Local Council were funded by the Planning Authority's Development Planning Fund. The project which got finalised prior to the summer months, to eliminate any inconvenience for visitors, included the resurfacing of the pathway and new furniture. The location of the pathway allows visitors to appreciate the stunning Xlendi cliffs and the picturesque bay.

Chairperson of the Planning Authority's Executive Council Johann Buttigieg said, "The purpose of the Development Planning Fund, which was launched earlier this year, is to widen the scope for funding and therefore give greater flexibility to what projects can qualify. This project, as is the case with many other similar projects we fund, enables the local council of the area to improve the tourism product within their locality. We are working side by side all local councils. This is to ensure that ambitious projects both small and large do not get delayed but are carried out to enhance the quality of life within our towns and villages."

In his speech, Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and the Property Market Chris Agius, encouraged more local councils to apply for this scheme with the possibility to improve the local infrastructure. He also emphasized that although the proposals of the Planning Development Fund scheme must pass from the respective local council; the Government agencies, NGOs and private individuals should seize this opportunity and come up with ideas too.

This new fund sees its financing coming from the amalgamation of the successful Urban Improvement Fund with that of the dormant Commuted Parking Payment Scheme. In addition, 20% of the revenue generated through applications for the regularisation of development is also being directed to the fund. This combination is bringing and making millions more available in funding for local councils to carry out projects which will improve the lives of their residents.
