The University of Malta's Faculty of Arts is currently accepting applications for the Taught Master of Arts in Film Studies, a part-time evening programme sponsored by the Ministry for Tourism and the Malta Film Commission. The entire programme will be taught in English and will run over six semesters starting in October.

This flexible programme benefitting from the Get Qualified Scheme is designed to address and reach the interests of students from different academic backgrounds with a strong interest in the theory and practice of film. It combines the theoretical aspects in Film Studies with a practical component and will enable productive interaction between the academia and the film and television industry.

The taught component will allow students to gain new insights and to hone their skills in the critical analysis of film and its relationship to the other arts. They will be introduced to the key transitional moments in the history of cinema and the principal theoretical approaches to film, to be explored in relation to specific genres, auteurs, contexts of production, as well as spectatorship. The programme will also provide students with the necessary skills to successfully plan and shoot a short film and to develop it throughout all of its stages from the script to the screen.

Compulsory units include subjects related to transitional key moments in the history of film, research methods, screenwriting and the production of a short film including cinematography. Elective modules allow participants to pursue specific areas of study which include, among others, world cinema, theoretical approaches to film, auteur cinema, the relationship of film, literature, comics and the other arts and audio-visual translation techniques.

The course is not restricted to graduates of the Faculty of Arts but welcomes Bachelor Honours graduates (Second Class or better) as well as those holding a Bachelor degree at Category II or better.

Applications from candidates not in possession of a first cycle degree but who have extensive experience and/or a profitable portfolio in related areas will be taken into consideration.
