A 29-year-old Syrian man who lives in Marsascala was today charged with attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl.

Alhasan Ali denied the charge, insisting he had never even met the girl. He said, however, that he had spoken to her through an online messaging app.

He told the court that doctors have conducted a DNA test, and this would prove he was telling the truth.

The accused also stands charged with robbing a Paceville club patron in January.

His request for bail was denied, with the court noting that there was a risk that he could flee.

Lawyer Josette Sultana was legal aid. Inspectors John Spiteri and Kylie Borg prosecuted.
