Love & Peace and Fondazzjoni U have joined forces to help raise much-needed funds for an orphanage in Jhandi, India, which is in a terrible state of repair. The centre, which is run by the Maltese Sisters of the Sacred Heart, currently accommodates 50 orphans - but it is hoped that the new works will open the centre up to a further 50 children who are in desperate need of help. A campaign to fund the project is now online at www.zaar.com.mt and it has already raised over €10,000 towards its €16,000 goal. 

"Your donation will help to provide these children with a decent place to live and an education that will help save them from poverty, abuse and crime," says Anselmo Bugeja, who is spearheading the team that will leave on a nine-week mission in September. "The existing infrastructure accommodates 50 abandoned children but their living conditions are extremely poor - they lack beds, furniture and other basic facilities to safeguard their health."

Thus, the Zaar campaign is hoping to raise funds to open an extension that will double the amount of space available and, therefore, double the number of children that can be accommodated. Beyond that, the funds will be used to finish the existing building, thanks to the purchase of beds, furniture, bathrooms and other basic facilities that are desperately needed.

"This is a Maltese project run by Maltese sisters who have dedicated their lives to helping these children," Anselmo continues. "Currently, many of the children have to eat and sleep on the floor as there is no furniture and there's only one bathroom to share between all 50 of them.

"We are thrilled to be working with Zaar on this project and to hopefully reach our target, as well as our stretch goals, thanks to the generosity of the Maltese people. This is an opportunity to truly make a difference in these children's lives and to ensure the success of this mission," he adds.
