Romanian homeless beggar gets 10 days in prison

A Romanian national today was jailed for ten days fafter he was accused of begging for money in Valletta. 

Ilie Dinu, a 64-year-old homeless man, appeared before magistrate Josette Demicoli this morning charged with living on alms from the public. The man was apprehended on 14 August. He was found begging near the Palace in Valletta. 

Police inspector Priscilla Caruana Lee led the prosecution while Noel Cutajar served as legal aid as the man did not have the financial means to hire a lawyer to represent him in court.

The man pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Following a lengthy discussion between the prosecution and defence, the court ruled that the man should be detained for ten days.
