A 24-year-old man from Sicily was given a suspended sentence by Magistrate Josette Demicoli after he pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting public officials and breaching public peace.

The court heard how Marco La Perna was in St Julian's, and while under the influence of alcohol, he threatened and offended police officers. The magistrate also heard how La Perna breached public peace and offended public morals by stripping naked in public. During this same incident, which took place on 15 August in St Julian's, the accused also damaged a Yamaha motorcycle which belongs to a third party.

Inspector Trevor Micallef also told the court that the accused caused slight injuries to a police officer on duty.

The man pleaded guilty to the charges against him and was handed a year prison sentence suspended for two and ordered to pay a fine of 4,200 euros.

Lawyers Stephen Tonna Lowell and Noel Cutajar appeared for the accused.
