The Ranch to launch new innovative album on Wednesday

Monday, 21 August 2017, 08:45 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Ranch will be launching its second album this week: “100 Smiles an hour” is a collection of 11 songs which bring out the diversity of the band. Sarah Calleja caught up with the four main members of the group – Benji Cachia (aka Banjo Rancho), Alan Portelli (Zir), Patryk Cutajar (Ricky) and Egle V. Pranaityte

How did the title of the album ‘100 smiles an hour’ come about?

When we were in Devon, England, some time ago, one of us out of the blue came up with the phrase and we immediately thought it would be a cool title as everything came about fast and with good energy. It is like what The Ranch is all about, it’s hard work but also fun and everything has to be done with balance.

What sort of genre do you consider your music to be?

It’s more like an artform, as we all have different backgrounds. There is a lot of different forms of pop music. Jazz, rock, funk, acoustic, electronic sounds as well. These all fall under one type of pop; it’s not cultural music or folk or classical. We do improvise, which is a big part of what we do and we have a very high energy level as everything we play is very uplifting and feel-good type of vibe. It is basically all the music we’ve picked up through the years as there are a lot of different styles that we like. However, although we play all sorts of styles in our music, it still all forms into The Ranch like if you hear a song, you know where it’s coming from.

How long did it take to write? Mention 3 things that helped you get through writing this album.

We did it between January to March, 3 months, and in April we were in the studio.

The three things that helped us were: The fans, deadlines ( we needed to be in the studio by April) and the members in the band, everyone in the band supports each other.

How do you get along with each other, who is the most difficult to work with?

We get along really well, we’ve been in a lot of different bands and all of us can say that this is by far the best one. We were friends before and everyone used to play together and jam together. Also, everyone really wants to do this, so we are all on the same page.

Everyone is difficult at a certain time; sometimes we focus on one person. It depends on the situation.

The Ranch will be launching their album at the Salesian Theatre in Sliema on Wednesday 23 August at 8pm.
