PD concerned about government’s low expenditure on public order, safety

Partit Demokratiku is concerned about Malta's low expenditure on public order and safety. In a statement, PD said that the data that was published recently by Eurostat shows that only 1.2% in 2015 of Malta's GDP goes towards financing the police, fire protection service, the courts and the prisons, making Malta rank third lowest among European countries.

Partit Demokratiku said it believes that our police force should be adequately equipped to solve the various cases and carry out the necessary investigations. For the police force to be able to do so it needs to be backed up financially.

The party said it is concerned that with the increase in crime rate, and in population growth, the spending should reflect the current realities. Thus spending on public safety and order should increase to a minimum of 2% as is the case in various European countries in order to equip the relevant institutions adequately.

Partit Demokratiku also asks whether Malta is prepared to deal with natural and/or manmade disasters should these unfortunately happen.  Any national disaster plan needs continuous review and supportive services must be updated. Also, given Government's commitment in favour of high rise buildings, PD asks. How prepared are we in case of a large scale disaster?

Our national preparedness plans may also need the support of much bigger nations and co-operation agreements must be sought.  The changes brought by the fluctuations in climate as well as the political volatility and the susceptibility to terrorism makes our small island state more vulnerable, the party said.
