A Chilean player suffered serious facial injuries when he was kicked in the face by an opponent on Friday.

Defender Sebastian Villegas, aged 26, who plays for Antofagasta was accidentally kicked by Matias Campos, who plays for San Marcos.

The San Marcos forward missed the ball completely and instead kicked his opponent right in the face. Campos was sent off by the referee.

Villegas is reported to have lost his senses and was immediately transported to hospital, where he was found to have suffered multiple fractures to the jaw and injuries to the eyes.

He was being kept in intensive care.

For the record, Antofagasta won the match 4-0.
