Żejtun scouts go to Gilwell Park

Monday, 11 September 2017, 15:00 Last update: about 8 years ago

A total of 122 members and relatives from the Żejtun Scout Group left the island on 12 August and flew to London to begin a week packed with adventure and fun at Gilwell Park.

The group was housed in two self-catering lodges within the park. A dedicated team of adult volunteers manned the kitchen and dining hall for an entire week, while the Group's members and adult leaders carried out the usual camp duties to ensure the smooth running of the camp.

Adventure activities were held four times a day and included adrenaline-inducing experiences such as zip-lining and 3G swing. The programme also included physical challenges such as kayaking, climbing and bouldering and team-building activities such as high all-aboard and Jacob's ladder. Other activities such as pioneering and orienteering provided mental challenges while events such as grass-sledging and pedal go-karts were loved by the young scouts in attendance. In between park activities group members also followed a summer camp programme organised by their leaders which provided for a packed week.

The time at Gilwell Park, which is considered as the home of scouting, also proved to be a great scouting adventure in terms of making new friends. Group members had the opportunity to meet scouts from all over the world namely Ghana, Germany, France, South Africa, Mexico, Argentina and Australia. Some scouts were members camping at the park while others were volunteers who ran the park activities.

The group also ventured into the city for a day where they visited the Tower of London, the London Eye and enjoyed a walk around some of the major attractions in central London. Keeping track of 122 individuals in a city like London is no mean feat, however, everyone made it to Marble Arch on time, exhausted but happy after a day well spent.

This is what VSL Adrian Ferriggi had to say on his return from the Group's trip: "All good things come to an end. It was a long wait until the trip arrived and it passed by way too quickly. Planning the trip wasn't an easy task but seeing everything go as planned is really satisfying. A huge thank you goes to all the leaders and helpers who gave their best to make this adventure a memorable one."
