Two elderly men from Romania were remanded in custody on charges of theft.

59-year-old Ion Balan and 67-year-old Constantin Teodorescu, both from Romania, appeared before magistrate Francesco Depasquale charged with aggravated theft.

Prosecuting inspector Godwin Scerri explained that on 13 September, the two men pickpocketed a wallet from the Mosta Dome. It appears that a third individual is involved but the police have not managed to find this person.

The two Romanians, both retired are currently living in an aparthotel in St Julian’s. They pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.

Representing the accused, lawyer Mark Vassallo asked the court for a permission to postpone the session by one week so that he can prepare the defence’s submission. The court upheld the request and adjourned the arraignment for 25 September. The prosecution had no objection as long as the men are remanded in custody.
