Plans for a rapid mass transport system are well underway, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects Ian Borg revealed in his opening address at a seminar on the future of automobility and traffic held at the Palace Hotel in Sliema.
Borg, however, did not divulge any specifics of the plan.
During his speech, he explained that the government has already begun and will continue implementing short term solutions to solve the problem surrounding traffic in the country, but maintained that the government needed to find long term solutions that will cater for Malta's ever growing and changing population.
“We require extensive work on our road network, along with Environmentally and financially sustainable transport systems.”
He went on to say that planning process for the Marsa junction near addolorata is almost finished, with the project still scheduled to start at the beginning of 2018, following the completion of the Kappara flyover.
Borg also spoke of plans to optimize the road network through Attard and the other surrounding localities.
The minister praised the country's commitment to phase out combustion based vehicles in favour of electric ones, and pointed to plans to increase charge outputs of electric cars by a further 400.
