TMID Editorial: Adulation begets fawning

One cannot miss how the PN media morphed seamlessly from Simon Busuttil to Adrian Delia.

We used to get huge dollops of Busuttil fawning and we will now get huge dollops of Adrian Delia, with huge pictures on the front page and all the stops on TV.

We now know it was useless then and it will undoubtedly be useless now.

More than the PL media and associated media, the PN media has always been centred around the personality of the leader in a way that would almost make Mao blush.

One understands, but does not condone, why this happens. Following such an acrid leadership battle, those employed in the party's media know their jobs are at risk, even if actually they are not.

The situation is bedeviled by the fact that three or four of the reporters decided to jettison any impartiality in the race and pinned their support of Dr Delia for all to see. Now that the race is over, those who supported Dr Delia would naturally be yearning to glorify their leader while those who did not sign would undoubtedly try to be the first to outdo the enthusiasts.

So we had, even in these last days, wall to wall coverage of every Simon Busuttil actions and speeches and we will undoubtedly get the same done to Dr Delia.

All this is mostly useless. The readers and the viewers are just not interested in the personality and the actions of the leader. And there is such a thing as overexposure in the media, as many former politicians now know.

Meanwhile, it has to be said that the much-mentioned bloodbath after Dr Delia's election did not happen. All that one could note was the resignation of a deputy mayor in Gozo and the public chiding of David Thake by Adele Borg, Tonio Borg's wife, who told him to 'stop being a sore loser and put a sock in it.'

Dr Delia came out with a battling speech on Sunday evening, promising to continue the battle against corruption and, true to form, joined Dr Busuttil in court yesterday in continuation of the battle regarding the Panama Papers.

This prompted a Labour wit to say that Dr Delia had condemned Daphne Caruana Galizia but then continued her battle.

And Dr Delia told Prime Minister Joseph Muscat where to get off when the latter tried to give him a sort of ultimatum regarding a decision taken by the PN under the previous leader.

In conclusion, Dr Delia would do well to be wary of adulation and worse by the PN's own media which in the long run would be completely counterproductive.
