Updated: Kane scores two as Tottenham hold on to beat West Ham 3-2

Associated Press Saturday, 23 September 2017, 16:57 Last update: about 8 years ago

Harry Kane scored twice as 10-man Tottenham held off a West Ham comeback Saturday to maintain its perfect away record with a 3-2 victory in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen appeared to have sealed victory just before the hour mark after Kane's first-half double had put Spurs in control. But headers from Javier Hernandez and Cheikhou Kouyate either side of Serge Aurier's dismissal ensured an uncomfortable finale for the visitors.

Tottenham has now won its opening three away games for the first time since the 1991-1992 season. It also matched a club-record equaling run of five successive away Premier League wins, stretching back to the end of its previous campaign.

Tottenham took the lead in the 34th at the London Stadium after Eriksen put Dele Alli through on the right. Alli provided a perfect cross for Kane to head in via the post.

Just four minutes later the lead was doubled as Alli once more got in behind the West Ham defense. Alli's shot was saved by Joe Hart but the ball fell straight for Kane who tapped into an empty net.

The game appeared to be over in the 59th when Eriksen found the bottom corner from the edge of the box just moments after Kane had been denied a hat trick when his free kick struck the post.

The woodwork thwarted Kane again minutes later as his shot from a tight angle on the left hit the post with a deflection off Hart's boot.

West Ham was rewarded for its persistence as Hernandez headed in from close range at the back post after Jose Fonte's flick on. The hosts were given further hope when Aurier was sent off after picking up his second yellow card in quick succession with 20 minutes remaining.

Despite Mauricio Pochettino's attempts to shore up Tottenham with the introduction of Harry Winks and Kieran Trippier, West Ham pulled another goal back.

In the 87th substitute Arthur Masuaku's inviting cross was met by Kouyate's powerful header at the back post, but Tottenham held on to claim three points.

After six games, Tottenham has 11 points, seven more than West Ham at the other end of the table.

Alvaro Morata scored a hat trick as Chelsea maintained its perfect away record in the English Premier League in beating Stoke 4-0 on Saturday.

Pedro scored the other goal as Chelsea took advantage of a lackluster Stoke display to cruise to an easy win at Britannia Stadium.

Despite having won just one of its three league home games, Chelsea has been perfect on the road and stays within three points of the Manchester sides at the top of the table.

In an already competitive race to be the division's top scorer, Morata joined Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku on six goals from as many games.

Morata's first three goals for the Blues came off his head, but it took him just two minutes to change that as he met Cesar Azpilicueta's through ball with a cool side-footed finish.

Pedro doubled Chelsea's lead in the 30th when he latched onto Darren Fletcher's misplaced chest pass and drove a fine finish across goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Morata's second was even better as he picked up the ball on the left, drove past two Stoke defenders, and curled the shot into the far corner from a tight angle in the 77th.

Although the finish was simple, the striker exhibited his fine movement off the ball five minutes later as he slipped his marker to find space to tap in Azpilicueta's knockdown, the fourth time Morata's international teammate has assisted him this season.

Stoke, which was fielding a makeshift defense with Kurt Zouma ineligible and Ryan Shawcross and Kevin Wimmer out injured, is 15th in the table having recorded just win in its opening six games.

Leroy Sane excelled in another devastating attacking display by Manchester City in its 4-0 win over last-place Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Saturday.

The Germany winger showed superb technique to finish off a one-two with David Silva and score the opening goal in the 44th minute, ending ultra-defensive Palace's resolute start to the game and allowing City to run amok after halftime.

Sane delivered a low cross to set up an easy tap-in in the 51st for Raheem Sterling, who then scored from close range from Sergio Aguero's cushioned volley in the 58th.

Aguero made it 4-0 by heading home a powerful whipped center from the ubiquitous Sane, before Fabian Delph curled in a shot from the edge of the area for the best goal of the lot in the 89th.

It's 15 goals in its last three league matches for City, which has won five of its six games and remains unbeaten. Pep Guardiola's side is the top scorer in the division with 21 goals and has a seemingly endless supply of attacking options.

City didn't even need Gabriel Jesus here, the Brazil striker kept on the bench.

Palace has now lost all six of its matches and has yet to score a goal. It threatens to get even worse for Palace coach Roy Hodgson, whose team must play Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham in its next four fixtures.

Romelu Lukaku's first-half strike gave Manchester United a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Southampton in the English Premier League on Saturday.

The Belgian forward's sixth goal in as many league games proved decisive and ensured United remained level with Manchester City at the top of the table.

United manager Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands in the closing stages.

Southampton failed to score at home for the ninth time in 11 matches at St Mary's.

United appears to have lost some of its early season fluency since losing Paul Pogba to a hamstring injury 10 days ago, and the midfielder's absence was evident once more as Southampton dominated possession.

However, while Southampton couldn't turn its possession into goals, United was ruthless.

Ashley Young, the latest player to be given a chance at left back by Mourinho, cut back onto his right foot and curled a perfect cross into the box for Lukaku to attack.

The striker's initial attempt was saved by Fraser Forster but Lukaku was the first to react and poked the ball into the empty net 20 minutes in.

Southampton's best chances fell to Oriol Romeu. The midfielder spurned a chance from close range, and later saw a header cleared off the line by Marouane Fellaini.

United held on to take its tally to 16 points from its opening six games, matching its best ever start to a league. Southampton is 11th.
