The Planning Authority's enforcement officers moved in with heavy machinery to start removing what it described as a scar plaguing the valley of Wied Qirda, limits of Siggiewi
The effected part of the valley known as Tal-Bilbli and covers an area of 25,000m2 is shrouded with extensive pockets of dumped construction waste, some of which are over two storeys high. The operation will take several days due to the extent of the illegality and the sensitivity of the site. Over 70 truck loads of this illegally dumped material have already been removed from the site.
"The patience of the Planning Authority ran out with a land owner after further dumping was noticed in recent weeks. The zone is characterised by agricultural land and is protected as an area of national value for its ecological, scientific and rural importance," a statement read.
"This is the second time within a year that the Authority carried out a direct action on this site. Last November, the Authority had started removing tons of inert material which had illegally been dumped on this site area as early as 2005. The contravenor had agreed to continue removing all the dumped construction material within an agreed timeframe."
"Following a site inspection some weeks back it was noticed by enforcement officers that not only was the inert material not being removed but it was starting to increase again. This prompted the Authority to move in again and complete the job itself, at the land owners expense. The contravenor is also being charged a daily fine of €50. "
Once the operation concludes, the Authority will ensure that the site is returned to its original state.
