MTA eyeing south of Malta, Xemxija for new sandy beaches

The Malta Tourism Authority is considering reviving 2012 plans to create a sandy beach in Xemxija as well as the south of Malta for similar developments, MTA chairman Gavin Gulia tells The Malta Independent on Sunday in an interview in today’s issue.

While such major and costly infrastructural works fall outside the Authority’s remit, Gulia says the MTA is carrying out, as far as Xemxija is concerned, traffic impact and other assessments to ascertain the viability of such a project.

Gulia explains, “The MTA must have discussions with the environmental agencies and the planning authorities, but we are looking at it seriously. I wouldn’t say it’s in a conceptual phase: it’s quite advanced, but we haven’t started because we have to conclude our studies.”

Gulia divulged that the MTA is also contemplating a similar idea for the south of Malta: “We also have to look at the south of Malta. We have a commitment to the south but we still have to identify where we could actually embark on a project such as this.”

As for a prospective for the south of the island, Gulia said it is still too early to say but stressed that the MTA is “looking at the south”.

Full interview will be published later
