Basketball: Gzira Athleta’s Michael Naudi and Christina Grima named Players of the Year

The BOV Basketball Players of the Year for season 2016/2017 were announced during the Basketball season opener at the MBA Basketball Complex in Ta’ Qali.

Gzira Athleta’s Naudi won the award for the BOV Men’s 1st Division. Malta’s most decorated player Michael Naudi has won his 7th Player of the Year award. His career can only be described as illustrious, with his first award coming in 1999 and still performing at the very top level 18 years later.

Christina Grima, also from Gzira Athleta, won the BOV Women’s Player of the Year Award.

Her ability to perform under pressure and pull the team behind her and keep them focused in the most difficult moments led her to her second individual award.

The Amateur league and junior categories were awarded as follows:

Amateur League Men – Robert Loporto (MelliehaTritones)

Under 23 Men – Kurt Xuereb (Cynergi Depiro)

Under 23 Women – Christina Curmi (Caffe Moak Luxol)

Under 19 Men – Francesco Mifsud Bonnici (Gzira Athleta)

Under 19 Women – Kristy Galea (Starlites)

Under 16 Boys – Nathan Xuereb (Gzira Athleta)

Under 16 Girls – Michela Zammit Cordina (Starlites)

Under 14 Boys – Matthew Barbara (Starlites)

Under 14 Girls – Marie Buhagiar (Hibernians)

Peter Perotti, Chief Officer at Bank of Valletta and Paul Sultana, President of the Malta Basketball Association presented the winners with their awards.

“Congratulations to the winners who excelled during the last season”, said Perotti. “Bank of Valletta is a major supporter of sporting initiatives in Malta and we are proud to be associated with this initiative that awards performance excellence among our top players.”
