Watch: EP president Tajani invites Caruana Galizia family to Brussels, more vigils held

Wednesday, 18 October 2017, 13:18 Last update: about 8 years ago

European Parliament president Antonio Tajani has invited the family of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia to attend a special plenary session that will be held in Brussels next week.

In a tweet, Tajani said that the journalist was “killed for seeking truth”.

A number of vigils are being held, in Malta and abroad, to remember Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was murdered in car bomb attack on Monday.

Many people have left bouqets of flowers at the feet of the Great Siege monument in front of the law courts in Valletta. Former prime minister Lawrence Gonzi and his wife Kate, and PD MPs Marlene and Godfrey Farrugia were among those who laid flowers on the monument this evening.

In Brussels, PN and PL MEPs joined European Commissioners Frans Timmermans, Mariya Gabriel and Andrus Ansip at another ceremony to honour the slain journalist.

A silent ceremony was later held at the University of Malta quadrangle later on this evening. The event was organized by the Civil Society Network, which has already organized demos in Valletta and Sliema earlier this week.

In the meantime the PN announced that Opposition Leader Adrian Delia will not be attending the European People’s Party Summit being held tomorrow, during such a ‘tragic’ time for this country.

This was to be Delia’s first Summit as leader of the PN. Delia sent a letter to EPP president Joseph Daul informing him that, in the current circumstances he feels he should skip the summit and remain in Malta.
