A man accused of murdering Matthew Zahra in 2012 has suggested that three explosive devices which were stored in the victim’s garage were unaccounted for, insisting he wants to speak to the police inspector

Jason Galea and Ronald Urry are charged with luring the deceased, who was a taxi driver, to a field, and shooting him dead.

Zahra disappeared in 2012 and his remains were only found in the Birzebbugia field the following year when police were investigating the murder of Mario Camilleri, known as L-imniehru, and his son Mario Camilleri jnr.  Jason Galea, who was charged with the double murder of the Camilleris.

Galea appeared in court and asked for legal aid, saying that his previous counsel did not want to speak with him.

Galea asked to address the prosecuting inspector, and said that Mario was keeping three bombs in Matthew Zahra's garage, with the latter's permission. “Have any investigations been carried out? We know what happened, they are still running around.”

He said that he went to the police headquarters to speak to inspectors about the explosives, but was sent to another officer and not called back since.

He insisted on wanting to speak to the inspector in light of a woman (Daphne Caruana Galizia) being killed two days ago by a bomb.

The court ordered that the accused’s legal situation be sorted out by the next hearing.
