INDEPTH: Daphne’s murder - Government 'should have appointed John Rizzo to oversee investigation'

The government should have appointed former Police Commissioner John Rizzo to oversee the investigation into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, Xarabank presenter Peppi Azzopardi said.

Interviewed by The Malta Independent news editor Rachel Attard for INDEPTH, Azzopardi said that Rizzo is the ideal person because he has the support of both sides of the house.  “The public would have the reassurance that this investigation is in safe hands and he has no allegiances.”

Azzopardi said that in the past days Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was visibly worried and, “he really wants this to case to be solved so that there is closure. I do not agree with the Leader of the Opposition Adrian Delia that the Prime Minister should resign but on the contrary, he should remain in office, be the prime minister of the country and carry out his duties.”

A national day of mourning following the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia is "crucial" for the nation, adding it would give the possibility to the country "to come together and condemn what happened".

The veteran journalist said that it was irrelevant what she had done, said, or whom she had hurt, stressing that it was "now completely irrelevant".

When asked whether the day of mourning for this Saturday or Sunday is too late, Azzopardi said that it's better to do it late rather than never. He agreed with the Prime Minister's statement saying he is considering offering a reward for information leading to the capture of the killers.
