The Cyber Crime Unit is currently investigating the source of the digital distribution of photographs of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s remains, which were posted straight from the crime scene shortly after the car bomb explosion that took her life on 16 October.

The police have confirmed they have initiated an investigation into the case with the help of the Cyber Crime Unit.

Within hours of the car bomb explosion, photographs were publicly circulated on WhatsApp and other digital messaging applications portraying the remains of Caruana Galizia at the scene of the crime. Investigations that are underway will attempt to ascertain the source from which the photographs were released.

In a recent interview, criminal lawyer Roberto Montalto told this newspaper that advancement in digital technology has make it easier to reach many people immediately, the commission of such a crime is therefore more easily facilitated yet harder to detect.

He had explained that developments in technology are moving at a “much faster pace” than the developments in the legislative progress and therefore one may come across some errors.

Montalto had also highlighted that in Malta one cannot sue for pain and suffering or moral damages at present, even though changes are in the pipeline.
