Information technology, programming or coding will perhaps never enjoy the glamour usually associated with the world of fashion but for just one day, these two opposing worlds will come together during a very original event which will seek to highlight how in today's fashion sector, IT does, in fact, play a very crucial role.

Dresscode: The Untold Science of a Fashion Show is an event which is being hosted at the Microsoft Innovation Centre at Skyparks on Sunday, 12 November between 4 and 7.30pm. The event is being organised by MissInTech, a young organisation made up of young female IT professionals who are on a mission to change the perception that IT is solely a male domain.

MissInTech's Bernine Caruana, Vanessa Vella and Maria Abela Scicluna, the minds behind this event explain how Dresscode: The Untold Science of a Fashion Show is being organised specifically to target young pre-teens and teenagers and their parents.

"There is still a very strong preconception out there that IT is exclusively a male thing. We are both IT engineers and today we work with a company where 40% of its employees are females. We want to tell our story and there is no better way than trying to tell this through something as appealing and glamorous as fashion. As we are busy organising this event, we are realising how in staging a fashion show, practically all aspects involve Science and Tech - from fashion design to hair and beauty products, from lighting to audio-visual projected synchronisations."

Mary Downing, manager of the Microsoft Innovation Centre expressed her satisfaction that such an innovative event will be taking place at Microsoft's MIC. "At Microsoft we have always strived to be leaders in attracting women to careers in high tech and we are involved in a wide range of programmes aimed at trying to attract, recruit, retain and develop women from around the world in the field of computer technology. We look at our support to this event as another opportunity to turn the spotlight on the issue of female empowerment in the IT sector, a sector which is still perceived as a male domain, which clearly is not and should not be."

The event will open with a fashion show directed by VIPAJ Modeling Centre featuring creations by established and new upcoming fashion designers and will be followed by a number of workshops during which we will be explaining to the audience how a variety of tech-related roles were crucial in organising the show.

Parallel to these workshops, a roundtable discussion will also be hosted between a panel of IT professionals and the parents. ESkills, the moderators for this workshop will direct the discussion towards tackling the minority of women in tech. It will be covering issues concerning possible career paths; Stem and gender identity; required persistence and built confidence; as well as any concerns parents might have.

Dresscode aims to display how combining Arts, Creativity, Science and ICT can result in a beautiful outcome. For this event, MissInTech is teaming up with some of Malta's finest current and future fashion designers namely Maria Cutajar, Rosemarie Abela and three MCAST students - Elise Galea, Lordes Giordmaina and Semona Gambacoata and last but not least Couture By Gaetano.

Anthony Mallia, another new MCAST graduate will be showcasing the subject of his thesis - a programme where shapes and lights have been synchronised to music - which will appropriately provide the projections during the fashion show.

Supporting MissInTech's vision and Dresscode, due appreciation goes to Microsoft, KPMG Crimsonwing, CS Technologies, Outlook Coop, Talbot & Bons and PowerHouse for the event's lighting.
