INDEPTH: ‘We cannot directly link Daphne’s death to collapse of rule of law’ – George Hyzler

INDEPTH online Friday, 10 November 2017, 09:27 Last update: about 7 years ago

Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder cannot be linked with the collapse of the institutions or the rule of law, Chamber of Advocates President George Hyzler insisted.

Speaking on Indepth when interviewed by the Head of News at The Malta Independent Rachel Attard, the President of the Chamber of Advocates said that the two things, Daphne's death and the collapse of the independent institutions, cannot be directly linked.

"Speaking about the motive is, at this stage premature. We need, of course the institutions to function better. That we agree on. But linking them intrinsically is not ideal."

George Hyzler has defended the Chamber's presence in the national protests which emerged after the journalist's death. "We weren't present holding banners, but we were there, I can assure you. We even sent out a flyer encouraging our members to attend. I personally wasn't there because I was abroad."

Reacting to the recent surveys which show the lack of faith by the public in the police force, Hyzler said that the result is obvious. "If the supporters of a football team are asked to state how much faith they have in the club after a massive defeat, the result will be pretty predictable."
