The national 2017-2018 Enduro Championship sponsored by WotoMoto and organised by ASMK is to start on Sunday.
The Enduro Championship will be spread over six events where five races will be held in Malta and one in Gozo. This season will again be supported by several quarry owners around Malta and Gozo who allow our activities to be held in their premises for the Enduro motorcyclists. Yet the first event will be held at the ASMK Sports Complex at Ta' Qali. The programme starts at 10am.
The firm Dunlop Tyres of Malta will again be donating an Enduro tyre to the Overall winner of each event during this season. This season will be seeing a new class where the expert riders compete in a class on their own while the less experienced will be grouped in another class where they stand a better chance to register a Class win.
For this season ASMK has invested in new Timing equipment where all motorcycle lap times will be controlled by the professional MyLaps timing system and will be used in all ASMK events.
This investment was made possible thanks to the Good Causes Fund and the Maltese Olympic Committee who have made it possible for the association to purchase this system.
Meanwhile last Sunday, ASMK gave a start to the Autocross cars championship again sponsored by Pasta Poiatti. For the first activity 20 cars were registered and were divided into two classes.
In the Modified class Jean Paul Grech on a Peugeot 106 and Gordon Johnson on his Opel Corsa dominated the heats of the day and won the highest score of the day which was also recorded by the new MyLaps Timing system.
Together with Grech and Johnson Vince Farrugia on Volkswagen Polo, the Opel Corsa of Jonathan Camilleri, Karl Micallef on Ford Fiesta and the Fiat of Noel Zammit also qualified for the Class A Finals.
After the second Lap Johnson made use of the Joker Lap and managed to remain in his placing but after the third Lap Grech also made use of the Joker Lap and ended leading ahead of Johnson and Farrugia.
Grech defended his placing until the end and finish winning the first Autocross event. He was followed by Johnson and Zammit as fourth placed driver now belonged to Farrugia ahead of Micallef who finished in fifth place. Camilleri is sixth following him retiring earlier during the race final.
In the Autocross Modified Class B final the qualified drivers were Keith Borg on a Vauxhall Nova, Ryan Scicluna on a Ford Fiesta, Ivan Birmingham on his new Suzuki Swift, Melo Zammit on an Opel Corsa and Brandon Lee Vassallo on his Peugeot 205.
From the race start Scicluna took the lead while Birmingham and Borg followed close behind. But soon Birmingham had to retire due to mechanical failure and soon it was Zammit who also had to retire for the same reason. As the race progressed to the finish, Scicluna took the finish flag ahead of Borg and Vassallo. Zammit and Birmingham finished in 4th and 5th places respectively.
For the first race of the Standard Autocross Deane Farrugia on his Citroen AX won all heats of the day. Nicovich Chircop also qualified on his Peugeot 106. The Renault 5 of Kyle Agius, Joseph Spiteri on his Opel Corsa, Alex Fenech and Quinn Camilleri both on Peugeot 106 also made it to the final race.
Right from the start Farrugia took the lead ahead of Agius followed by Chircop and Spiteri. During the first Lap Spiteri, Agius and Farrugia made use of the Joker Lap but this resulted in each of these three drivers to hold their placing to the race finish.
But it was Farrugia who won this first race of the championship. Chircop and Agius followed in second and third places respectively. Spiteri finished fourth followed by Camilleri and Fenech.
Meanwhile during this Sunday the Camilleri brothers, Clayton and Kyle, took part in the Italian Motocross Championship organised by the Italian Federation FMI for Motocross in Trapani, Sicily.
Clayton competed in the MX1 class (Over 21) on a KTM 450cc motorbike while Kyle competed in the MX2 Class (Under 21) on a 250cc KTM motorcycle. Both the Camilleri brothers climbed on the podium as each of them won second place in each respective class. This is a very promising result.
Next weekend, the Camilleri brothers will be competing again in the next last race of the in Agrigento.
