Friday, 17 November 2017, 18:49 Last update: about 7 years ago

One man has been shot dead and another left grievously injured at Raymond's Upholstery on Mdina Road, Attard.  The incident took place at around 6.15pm.

The aggressor, who was reportedly wearing a helmet during the shooting, is on the run after fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

The murdered man has been named as Angelo Mangion, 58, from Qormi (photo above).

The injured man, Raymond Grima, who is 61 years old and resides in Iklin, was taken to hospital by ambulance under police escort. Grima is the owner of the shop. The police said on Saturday evening that Grima is still in critical condition.

It is believed that the target of the shooter was the shop owner, Grima, who was injured, whereas the man who died, Mangion, was in the shop by chance. Mangion's daughter, Georganne Xerri, wrote on Facebook that her father went to the shop to have his motorcycle seat upholstered.

The police on Saturday evening said that several people have been questioned.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 119 or 21224001.

Sources told this newroom that the aggressor entered the shop where the two men were and started shooting.

Mangion was reportedly hit three times while Grima was hit four times.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja together was on site conducting an inquiry. Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar was also on the scene.  The road has been closed to traffic.

This is the seventh murder this year and the first one after the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Several police units are involved in the search for the killer. An Armed Forces of Malta helicopter is also being used in the manhunt. The aircraft is flying over the area between Zebbug and Attard.

Later this evening, the police have said that "a number of individuals" are helping in the investigation. A statement also said that the autopsy on the body of the victim was also carried out.
