The importance of Health and Safety at the place of work, irrespective of the work place, the gender and the age of the workers has been under the spotlight at European level and within that context at a National Level.

The EU Campaign “Healthy Work Places for All Ages” is aimed at promoting sustainable work and healthy ageing from the start of the working life. In turn this is also directed at preventing health problems throughout the working life and providing ways for employers and workers to manage occupational safety and health in the context of an ageing workforce. One other important aim is the encouragement of the exchange of information and good practice.

Mark Gauci, the CEO of the OHSA in Malta has embraced this in its mission and has implemented a number of initiatives to ensure that there is increased awareness about the responsibilities of everyone in this field to ensure that this is achieved.

“Our responsibility is related to the creation of the necessary awareness so that everyone knows the importance of their health and the safe environment of the workplace”, said DrGauci. Risks vary according to the different ages, even if one is exposed to the same issues within the same environment. Dr. Gauci said that the importance of knowledge is essential and we’re committed to ensure that everyone is aware of these various risks and how to mitigate. Occupational Health and Safety is crucial in all work places alike. It is not limited to the construction sites but is crucial to be addressed at office environments, at industrial environments, in retail sectors and also in those involved in the various aspects of the supply chain.

Research and statistics confirm that the European workforce is ageing. Retirement ages are rising and working lives are likely to become longer.

The EU-OSHA has embarked on delivering the messages, which reflect the fact that working is good for physical and mental health, and good management of occupational safety and health increases productivity and efficiency. As such demographic change can cause problems, but ensuring a sustainable working life helps to meet those challenges.

Gauci concluded that “as OHSA we are committed to continue with our efforts to ensure that we engage with all the stakeholders so that any of these challenges are addressed to ensure a sustainable work life for all workers at all ages in all workplaces.”
