Civil Society Network: Maltese authorities should provide all necessary protection

Sunday, 26 November 2017, 17:19 Last update: about 7 years ago

Following the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia a few weeks ago, Maltese government institutions defended themselves against accusations of failing to prevent the said murder by stating that Ms Caruana Galizia did not want police protection.

The Civil Society Network said in a statement it notes that Maltese and international press have reported in the past days that both whistleblower Maria Efimova as well as ex-Police Inspector and FIAU official Jonathan Ferris stated that they feel that their lives are in danger in view of the fact that they have information related to criminal activities related to Malta as well as the fact that they refused to remain silent on criminal activities.

The Civil Society Network is publicly demanding that the Maltese authorities, with specific reference to the Police and the Attorney General, should provide all necessary protection to those persons who possess information or who are active against criminality as they are being exposed to risks on their lives or on their families.

Such protection should also be given to those politicians and members of the judiciary who are involved in investigations related to the allegations made by Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The Civil Society Network insists that our country needs a stronger and unequivocal commitment towards rule of law.

The Civil Society Network will be holding a demonstration for Justice on Sunday 3 December, at 4pm in Valletta. The main speaker will be former anti-corruption magistrate Antonio Di Pietro.
