Works on appropriate venue for hill-climb races in Mtaħleb

Thursday, 7 December 2017, 13:35 Last update: about 7 years ago

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations Clifton Grima visited the site in Mtaħleb at which improvement works are being carried out where hill climb racing takes place, as was pledged by the Government in the electoral programme. Sports Malta is investing around €500,000 in this project, while works are being carried out by Transport Malta.

The road is being resurfaced with the best material, while crash  barriers are going to be installed so as to increase safety. The goal is to have an uphill road with appropriate levels in order for it to be used for competitive motor sports. Transport Malta started working on this project following the completion of works carried out by the Cleansing Department. During roadworks, potable water systems were installed, aside from other works which were identified during the process.

Minister Borg expressed his satisfaction with the work being done in this sector, and said that the Ministry aims to have a consistently broad vision when carrying out projects so as to ensure that the resulting improvements are more widely appreciated. He is satisfied with such a project as people who are fond of the sport can see that their needs are being addressed. He further stated that it should also be noted that the road in question will also benefit those who visit the area, tourists and Maltese citizens alike, and will be making the site more easily and comfortable accessible, leading to better enjoyment of the scenery as well as the area itself.

The Minister went on to say that the authority is expected to complete the project soon so that clubs can start making use of the road for their races again, with increased safety measures as a result of these works. This is all due to consultation with the Malta Racing Club which allowed its members to contribute their vast expertise in the sector — a collaboration which resulted in a project of the highest standards.

Minister Borg said that he is delighted to see diverse departments and organisations working together to create a new facility for the benefit of all those who are fond of this sport. He also expressed his hope that all enthusiasts will responsibly enjoy the fruits of this labour.

Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima said that, as was pledged by the Government, the Mtaħleb hill is being resurfaced with an investment of around €1.5 million.
