Jason Azzopardi receives ‘satisfactory explanation’ from police after reporting he was followed

Nationalist Party (PN) MP Jason Azzopardi said that he has been provided with a “satisfactory explanation” by two police inspectors after he reported having been followed by two cars while he was driving last Saturday.

In a Facebook post, Azzopardi wrote:

“With reference to my report to the police about a car shadowing mine last Saturday, the police have called in the person concerned and they gave me a satisfactory explanation. I publically thank Inspectors Zahra and Butters for their work and assistance”.

Azzopardi gave no further details on what that explanation entailed or the identity of those following him.

On the day in question, Azzopardi had pointed fingers at the Malta Security Services. He had described being followed by two suspicious vehicles, one white one just metres away from his and another grey vehicle some distance away.

Azzopardi told Times of Malta that when he accelerated, the car accelerated, when he braked, the car braked.

Later in the day, the head of the secret services phoned Azzopardi to assure him that the entity had nothing to do with him being followed. This led to the retraction of a previous social media post aimed at the secret services where he said ‘you will not intimidate me’.

Government issued a statement on Saturday evening stressing that the security services was not following Azzopardi and that it regrets “such misinformation” by a member of parliament.
