Tuesday, 12 December 2017, 18:41 Last update: about 7 years ago

New Year's Eve celebrations organised by the Victoria Local Council and the Ministry for Gozo will be held for the twelfth consecutive year.

This was announced during a press conference addressed by Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Valletta 2018 Deo Debattista, MTA Chairman Gavin Gulia, and Mayor of the Victoria Local Council Samuel Azzopardi.

Victoria mayor Samuel Azzopardi said that "New Year's Eve in the City'is year on year becoming a major event on the island attracting locals, Maltese and tourists alike, who choose Gozo for their New Year's Eve celebrations."

Gulia said that the Malta Tourism Authority is committed in organising such initiatives, more so in the shoulder months. "Such activities form part of the Authority's strategy in attracting more tourists to Malta and Gozo, and for 2018 the MTA is aiming to bring over more than 2.3 million tourists."

Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista spoke about the role that Gozo will play during next year's Valletta 18 celebrations. "Gozo will have an important role to play during 2018. We absolutely did not want the title of European Capital for Culture to only be associated with Valletta. During this unique year, 200 out of the 400 events will take places outside Valletta, 28 of which will be held in Gozo during Valletta 2018."

Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana said that the Ministry is committed to continue to invest in Gozo's distinctive product, so that Gozo will be prepared to welcome all those who choose to spend the festive season there.

"These activities are the prelude to an exhaustive chain of cultural and entertainment events which will be hosted in Gozo in 2018", said Minister Caruana. "The Ministry for Gozo is investing heavily not only to promote Christmas in Gozo, but also other major events which will be launched throughout the coming year."
