A 42-year-old man from Romania was remanded in custody this afternoon on charges related to fraud.

Preprelita Petrisor, 42, of Timisoara in Romania was apprehended by the Rapid Intervention Unit after they were informed about the withdrawal of large sums of money from an ATM in Msida.

It appears that the man withdrew almost €10,000 through different bank cards, all of which had been cloned. The magistrate heard how the police were able to intercept the accused through CCTV footage of the man as he withdrew money.

The man, who has not fixed address in Malta and works as a tourist agent, pleaded not guilty to the charges which included criminal conspiracy, possession of items which could be used for fraud, fraud of over €5000 and knowingly making use of false documents.

Lawyer Christopher Chircop, who appeared for the man as legal aid, did not ask for bail.

Police inspector Matthew Vella led the prosecution.
