PL, AD remember Karin Grech; 'like Raymond Caruana, she was blameless victim', PM says

The Labour Party this evening commemorated the 40th anniversary of the killing of Karin Grech.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat led a ceremony at the foot of the monument dedicated to Grech, who was 15 when she was killed by a parcel bomb.

The case has now turned 40.

Muscat said this was a wound that was not easy to heal but insisted that 40 years down the line, love and respect should be the dominating factors in our society.

The PM said Karin Grech, who would today be 55, was a blameless victim like Raymond Caruana. He even referred to the two as ‘brother and sister.’

Muscat also referred to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder in October of this year, but said the difference was that in that case people had been arraigned and justice was taking its course. The state has to find the brains and hands behind these homicides, he said.

Alternattiva Demokratika also took part in the commemoration.

Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said:"It is important that we remember such tragic parts of our history as a nation. It would be best if such instances are commemorated together. A clear message againt intolerance is necessary. These tragedies are not only tragedies for the families involved but for all of us as a nation."

"AD's presence at this ceremony is our message against intolerance. Earlier this month AD was also present at the commemoration of Raymond Caruana's murder in Gudja. Political and ideological differences are solved through dialogue and discussion - which should always remain central to the democratic process. Violence and actions leading to violence should be resisted."
