Over 85,000 people gathered in St Georges Square, Valletta, to celebrate the New Year on Sunday. The record crowd was truly entertained: from the aerial acrobatics of a ballerina to the spectacular midnight fireworks and the live music performances.

The organizers had said they expected some 70,000 to attend but the number was greatly exceeded.

The huge gathering emphasised how special this New Year is for Maltese people because it is the first time that Valletta will be the European Union Capital of Culture, the government said in a statement yesterday.

The magical experience was full to the brim with both local and international artists. The programme included local artists such as The Brass House; Gianluca Bezzina and Eleanor. In addition UK artists like Ember Trio were also performed.

The successful event was managed by the 2018 Foundation together with the Ministry of Justice, Culture and Local Government and other bodies.

“This was one of the biggest spectacles Valletta has seen in the last few years. This was evident through the crowds that entered Valletta to watch the show” the ministry of culture stated.

The event, which ran from the hours of 8pm to 2am was televised for spectators at home too and public transport, both bus and ferry, were available for revellers to all destinations from Valletta till 4am.

In the coming days Valletta will officially become the European Capital of Culture. The event will be held on 20 January.
