The Attorney General is traditionally appointed from within the AG’s office, Justice and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said.
Interviewed by The Malta Independent editor-in-chief Rachel Attard on the programe INDEPTH, Bonnici said that every time an Attorney General was appointed during different administrations, they were not handpicked but were the next person in line for the job.
Bonnici added that “we would like to attract the best minds to this office but good lawyers, fresh out of university, think twice about coming to work at the AG’s office after hearing all this criticism that is levelled against the institution. This situation is definitely not helping us.”
Minister Bonnici was also asked about the rule of law, the judiciary and V18.
