Out of the six new government schools that are planned to be opened in the next five years, two will be schools for children with a disability.
According to information tabled in parliament on Tuesday evening by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, San Miguel School and Guardian Angel School, in Zejtun and Hamrun respectively, will be schools specifically catering for children with disabilities, and are currently in the design stage.
The other four schools out of the six are all primary schools, which will be located in St Paul’s Bay/Qawra, Marsascala, Msida and Rabat. Bartolo informed that all schools will be built in Development Zones.
The information provided states that in primary schools in St.Paul’s Bay/Qawra (part of Marija Regina College) and Marsaskala (part of St Thomas More College) work has already began. Works on the primary school at St Theresa College in Msida are at the planning stage.
There are currently five schools around Malta and Gozo catering for students with physical and intellectual disabilities; San Miguel (primary school), Helen Keller (secondary school), Guardian Angel (secondary school), Dun Manwel Attard in Wardija (post-secondary school) and Sannat Special Unit (primary, secondary and post-secondary school).
