Application to extend Pinto Quays 4 and 5 to be decided today

The Planning Authority Board will today decide on an application filed by the Valletta Cruise Port, for an extension of Pinto Quays four and five, Floriana.

“Pinto Wharf currently operates as the cruise passenger terminal, and the use of the Wharf will not change as a result of the proposed extension. The main objective of the proposal is to improve berthing facilities for larger cruise liners as currently there is need to use spacer barges to accommodate the berthing of the large vessels,” the Case Officer’s report read.

“The extension to the quays will involve the relocation of the berthing line 15metres off the existing quay. This will serve to align the quays with the adjacent quay at Lascaris Wharf. Quays 4 and 5 are currently 240 m long and aligned at an angle to Quay 3 and set back slightly from Lascaris Wharf.”

From photomontages presented, the quays would extend outwards.

One person has objected, stating that the proposed development “would increase the nuisance which the objector and his family have been suffering for the past year due to the commercial running activity, works, maintenance of ships and other vessels done at quay no 4 and 5 by Valletta Cruise Port plc.”

The construction of the extension will incorporate a series of piled platforms and trestles with precast concrete decks spanning between them. Two 30 metres high lighting masts are also being proposed.

Addressing the visual impact, the Case Officer’s report mentions that the proposed extension of the quay 4 and 5 will be subjoined with the existing concrete quay and will retain the present level above sea level. “Considering this the proposed development will have a minimal impact when viewed from long distance views. In this regard the quay cannot be considered to impinge on the scheduled Grade 1 Area of High Landscape Value and Harbour Fortifications.”

The case officer has recommended that the application be approved.
