None of the other six people who were taken to Mater Dei Hospital yesterday following a fire in Marsascala were seriously injured, the police confirmed with this newsroom.
A fire had broken out in an apartment in Triq l-Aħmar, Marsascala at about 5.30am yesterday. Gordon Spiteri aged 35, was found in the common parts of the apartment block by members of the Civil Protection Department and the police. He was taken to hospital where he was certified dead. Reports said that he was trying to help neighbours when he was overwhelmed by the smoke.
Six other people were taken to hospital as a result of the fire including a three-year-old, however the police said that none of them were seriously injured. The police said that some of them were treated for smoke inhalation, and some were taken for a check-up or to be treated for shock. The police also said that normally, people are not kept in hospital if they are not in critical condition, and said that none of the six were in such a state.
A magisterial inquiry is being led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud and police investigations are underway.
