Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna has been discharged from San Carlos de Apoquindo Hospital, in Santiago, Chile, where he was hospitalised for the past three days after removing his gallbladder.

Mgr Scicluna will be recovering at the Apostolic Nunciature of Chile, where he is also expected to continue his work related to the mission entrusted to him by Pope Francis.

Mgr Scicluna is in Chile as a papal envoy to investigate complaints about Bishop Juan Barros, who has been accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring sexual abuse of young parishioners by the Rev. Fernando Karadima, who was removed from ministry and sentenced to a lifetime of "penance and prayer" in 2010.

The Maltese archbishop entered the hospital Tuesday after starting his interviews with victims and others opposed to the appointment of a bishop accused of covering up for the country's most notorious paedophile priest.
