The Labour Party councillors of St Paul’s Bay have been accused by the Nationalist Party of hindering the election of the mayor, thereby working against the interests of the community.
In a statement signed by spokesman Robert Cutajar, the PN said that Labour councillors did not respect the decision taken by the court to resolve the impasse. The court ruled that, after the resignation of Graziella Galea, the PN councillor with the second highest number of votes is elected mayor.
But Labour councillors on Friday chose to disrupt the council meeting and walked out, the PN said.
The PN said that minister responsible for local councils must now take a decision about the acting council secretary, Elke Sghendo, who challenged the minister’s advice to elect a mayor from the PN ranks.
