Volleyball: Anything can happen now in the Women Super League category

Saturday, 17 March 2018, 09:30 Last update: about 7 years ago

The women Super league Category is nothing like the previous season, where each team is fighting for every point. Two of the top teams in this division engaged in a battle during Friday 9th March. Balzan Flyers Crosscarft needed the straight win to secure a chance for the podium, while Fleur De Lys Royal Panda would have claimed the title with few games still left to play.

With almost 2 hours of intense play, Balzan Flyers Crosscraft managed to snatch an easy title off Fleur De Lys Royal Panda with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 27-25 & 25-21).

During Sunday, both teams had yet another match, with both Fleur De Lys Royal Panda and Balzan Flyers Crosscraft winning their respective matches in straight sets, against Sliema Wonderers and Kavallieri respectively.

Fleur de Lys Royal Panda started on a high with Costa’s services and took a comfortable lead that was maintained throughout the whole set. The second set was more balanced were Sliema Wonderers were managing to counter back with Toni’s powerful attacks, however FDL raised their gameplay, with Grech’s block and Saracina’s attacks, securing the second set. In the third set FDL continued dominating the game with Attard and Sebok’s attacks greatly supported by libero Polato’s impeccable defence, securing a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-19 & 25-15).

During the first set, Kavallieri took their time to settle during the game, which costed them the first set to be lost 25-12 against Balzan Flyers Crosscarft, however they managed to intimidate Balzan girls in the second set, taking away 21 points, before Balzan closing the set in their favour. During the third set, Balzan got their act together and ended the game with 25-7 points.

In the Women First Division Category, Birkirkara Volleyball Club faced Swieqi Phoenix, who last week mathematically assured themselves this season’s First Division title two games in advance. Although Swieqi won their match 3-0, continuing an unbeaten run of 11 matches, Coach Zammit Munro’s girls found it difficult to deliver the level of volleyball which has made them champions. Lack of concentration had an impact on Swieqi’s game, while Decelis’ B’Kara girls played one of their best matches of the season, which has put Swieqi in difficulty throughout the duration of game. In the end, Swieqi’s players came through, and protected their unbeaten sheet with yet another 3-0 win (25-19, 25-19 & 25-22).
